Nanotech projects for food sector outlined at conference
Nanoengineered products for the food sector—including a smart RFID nano sensor—took center stage at a two-day conference held Nov. 20 and 21 in Braga, Portugal to discuss the science of the miniscule. Scientists and developers at the conference revealed some of the developments that could be important to the food sector if these are commercialized. Nanotechnology is championed by several manufacturers for use in packaging to extend shelf life, or more controversally, for improving the nutritional content and impact of foods. Read more...
FDA funds anti-food terrorism efforts
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is pumping more funds into securing the safety of the nation's food supply. The move, which comes as part of the agency's recently announced Food Protection Plan, will see three grants being awarded to spot radioactive material in food. FDA said the lab grants will expand the testing program of its Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA) to address the threat to food safety through radiological terrorism events. FDA proposes limiting Omega 3 claims for products without suitable nutrient level
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has prepared a new docket entitled 'Food Labeling: Nutrient Content Claims; Alpha-Linolenic Acid, Elcosapentaenoic Acid, and Docosahexaenoic Acid Omega-3 Fatty Acids,' which would prohibit the nutrient content claims for DHA, EPA and ALA, based on three notifications submitted to the agency, because they are not based on an authoritative statement that identifies a nutrient level to which the claims refer.
