xpedx is upgrading its U.S. distribution network with a RFID-enabled warehouse management system, which the company says will benefit customers with increased supply chain productivity, activity-based costing, better order accuracy and quicker order turnaround, shorter travel time, and real-time inventory tracking.

Clothing retailer expands RFID deployment
American Apparel, a retailer of clothing for young adults, continues support of RFID for next generation in-store systems by entering into an agreement to pilot Clarity-ARS Advanced Retail System. The store item-level inventory and operations management system uses Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 R2 and BizTalk RFID capabilities.

Pet products co. automates smart-box encoding
Instead of an RFID-compliancy solution that requires separate printing and application of tags to corrugated boxes, Normerica, Inc., implements a RFID system that uses corrugated boxes with passive EPC Gen 2 RFID tag already embedded. The boxes are encoded as they pass through the pet product manufacturer’s commissioning process.

Staples Business Depot completes RFID inventory-tracking pilot
On the heels of strong results from an initial five-store pilot of the intelliTRACKER inventory tracking system, Staples Business Depot announces plans to expand deployment of the system to other stores. During the pilot, the intelliTRACKER system proved more accurate than physical counts, and shrinkage for the tagged inventory was eradicated.

In a patent titled Personal area network systems and devices and methods for use thereof, Apple puts the emphasis on a gadget interconnectivity future, in which the company foresees radio frequency transmitter receivers that can create connections between gadgets which may be fitted on any part of a person’s body.

RFID Europe show proves strong draw
According to IDTechEx, its RFID Europe 2008 event featured offerings from more exhibitors than any other RFID event held in Europe. Exhibitors to the two-day show, which began Sept. 30, showed and discussed a range of technologies from active RFID, RTLS and sensor networks, near-field communication, RFID systems, and breakthroughs in HF and UHF RFID and RFID manufacturing.
