Vol. 3: System Integrator Guide
System Integrators Play Central Role in Packaging Automation
This third and final installment of the Automation in Packaging Benchmark Study focuses on system integrators, and the role they play coordinating projects for packagers, equipment builders and automation suppliers. Packaging is a specialty that manufacturers in virtually every industry must address. Control Engineering and Packaging Digest set out to investigate this dynamic market through the Automation in Packaging Benchmark Study, a three-part, year-long research project conducted by Reed Research Group. This 360° overview of the state of packaging automation reveals the technology, market drivers and business issues affecting packagers, equipment builders and system integrators. System integrators are a small, but influential group that provides hands-on help for system design, manufacture and installation. They also offer multi-industry insights to help packagers obtain the optimal solution for automating their production.

Executive Summary Packaging Digest and Control Engineering have conducted a comprehensive research study addressing the technology, market, and business issues affecting the state of packaging automation. This is the third and final wave of a three-part study conducted in 2008. This third installment of the Automation in Packaging Benchmark Study focuses on system integrators and the role they play coordinating projects for packagers, equipment builders and automation builders. This report is an executive summary of the study results, providing an overview of key findings related to system integrators, types of automation and customer buying behaviors that influence their services.
Automation Profile

This report provides graphical depictions of survey data covering system integrators: roles of integrators, where the can offer expertise, types of automation equipment used, and important aspects of automation now and over the next five years.

Buying Behaviors This detailed findings report provides graphical depictions of survey data covering how packagers decide to hire system integrators and how much leeway the integrators have in designing and assembling an integrated packaging line.
Study Comparisons This detailed findings report provides graphical depictions comparing survey data gathered from all three surveys, comparing responses from packagers, machine builders and system integrators.
Supplement Included in this report are: a brief profile of the respondent audience; importance of automation when selecting system integrators; satisfaction with the integrators; and the role of automation in packaging processes over the coming years.
Vol. 2: Machine Builders (published in August 2008)

Research Reveals Packaging Machine Builders Outlook and Influences
With an economic value of nearly $133 billion annually in the U.S., packaging is big business, so Control Engineering and Packaging Digest set to investigate this dynamic market. The 2008 Packaging Automation Benchmark Study is a year-long, three-part research project that reveals the technology, market, and business issues affecting packagers, machine builders, and system integrators. In Volume 2, research results and analysis focus on the machine builders–who they are, what types of automation they typically provide on their products, how customers influence what automation features are standard or optional, and the impact packaging is expected to have on their business now and in the future.

Vol. 2 - Analysis

> Machine builders influence, interpret packagers' needs
> Packagers speak out
> It's a small world for OEMs
> Shifting safety responsibilities
